World Cup
Went home for lunch today and ended up catching a bit of USA vs. the Czech Republic. Now this isn't an expert opinion or anything, but I really think our team would do a lot better if they would just stop sucking.

I really hope I just caught them on a bad day.

As you may remember, Mike, I am a long time fan of World Cup soccer and the U.S. team. You did catch them on a bad day and on a day when they played one of the (if not THE) best team in Europe. It was depressing, though, eh? I also saw some of the Italy v Ghana game, and y'know what. . . it may not get any better. They both looked really good. The U.S. team, however, is better than they looked yesterday.

Italy vs. Ghana was a hell of a game. If I thought the US doing well would have much impact on the state of soccer in this country, I'd root harder for them, but as it is, I enjoy watching from a place on non-attachment, just wanting to see the game played beautifully.

I'm looking forward to seeing Brazil play, obviously.

And the depressing part of me was that the US teams seems to have plenty of individual talent; they're just not communicating well as a team.

Caveat: I watched the match with Christie, and so some of my "insights" might have originated with her. Except for the one about sucking. That was all mine.

I agree re: Italy v. Ghana. I'm partial to Italian soccer (though I sorely miss Roberto Baggio). They tend to be super creative through the midfield. When you then see them play the fast, physical, stright-forward Ghana, you get a game w/ two contrasting styles. Punch, counter-punch. . .fun, fun, fun!

The two main problems I saw w/ the U.S. v. Chechs was both a lack of courage to run at the defense on the dribble and lack of control on the first touch of the ball. If your going to dump the ball off, the receiver has got to be able to hold onto it or your going to give it away every time. I really think, however, it was mostly nerves. The early goal really rattled them! And the Chechs are good enough to make it really, really hard to get in the groove.
