Local news with national implications: Guardsman, 58, is Iraq-bound. The pictures really drive it home.

It may interest you to know that a fair number of Army Reservists are over 50 and still serving. The Army is requiring me to retire in January, 2007, just because I will be 60 years old. Most of us have been on active duty in the Vietnam War or just stayed a long long time in the Reserve. I think it is likely to be unanimous that we see our service as our duty and our pride.

Your pride is well-deserved and hard-earned. But I do not think that it is to our nation's credit that we are sending men at the edge of retirement into combat. And all of our men and women in uniform deserve more from us than to be asked to serve in the kind of war Iraq has turned into, thanks to the incompetence, ignorance and arrogance of the civilian leadership.
